10 Ways To Reduce Stress When Driving

It is no uncommon to feel stressed at the wheel. A lot of us are going to and from work- the thoughts of work will be buzzing around your head while you are in the car even if you do not realise. It is important that you reduce stress when driving.

It may not be work-related though, being in the car could offer up more stresses. These can be: traffic jams, lateness, reckless drivers on the road, road closures and more. General stresses of life will follow you when you are behind the wheel too, so they will contribute to driving stress as well.

The problem is, you are safer behind the wheel when you are calm. You need to be aware of your surroundings, but relaxed drivers will not be on edge whilst driving- which can lead to erratic and dangerous manoeuvres.

Now we have explained why you may be feeling stressed, let us see some ways to relieve some of those anxieties.

Start Out Early

If you think you are going to be late, that can often make you more stressed and your driving will become faster and less controlled.

If you allow for extra time, it means you will not have to worry about being late. It also means that if you do run into any traffic jams- you can relax and know you still have plenty of time.

Plan Your Journey

Using an app like Google Maps or Waze allows you to track the traffic levels before you set off. This means you can plan your route and make sure you do not run into any unexpected delays.

Having to alter your journey or going on an unfamiliar route will cause more stress. This could all be avoided if you planned beforehand.

Look At The Road Ahead

Being surprised by something unexpected happening up ahead will stress you out and could make your driving become unsafe. If you look further down the road, you will be able to prepare for what may happen up ahead.

You will be able to act fast as well as safely to what unfolds.

Turn Your Phone Off

We cannot help it, we are addicted to our phones whether we like it or not. Being distracted by them while driving though is a big no-no. Soon it will not just be illegal to be on your phone while driving though. It will be illegal to even touch it to skip a song on it. This begs the question then, why have it on anyway.

If you are prone to be distracted by your phone, turn it off or switch it to ‘Do Not Disturb’ so that you cannot be distracted.

Practice Makes Perfect

Drive more often and your nerves will turn into confidence. That will seem difficult to any nervous drivers out there as this is the last thing they will want to do. However, if you cannot learn the piano without playing it- the same applies to being out on the road.

Start locally on roads that you know and slowly venture further- you will be fine.

Do Not Be Lured

You may be a calm driver, there may be others you come across who are not. If you are challenged to a screaming match, politely decline and do not enter into any drag races off the lights or similar.

It may all end in tears.

Look After Your Vehicle And It Will Look After You

If you make sure your vehicle is maintained as much as possible, you will avoid breakdowns other maintenance related issues such as worn tyres or failing brakes.

This will allow your mind to switch off for a minute or two and refresh you for when you get back behind the wheel.
