Stopping Engine Idling Could Save Lives

We all need to do our bit for the environment, we know that. But what you might not have known is a very simple way to help the environment and the health of those who are directly around you!

Reduce engine idling. That is a very simple way that we can all reduce our emissions.

Idling Action London is a London-wide behaviour change campaign that aims to reduce “localised air pollution”, which is caused by motorists leaving their engines running when they are parked up.

But What is The Problem?

Although this campaign was launched in London, it affects everywhere in the UK. If you leave your engine idling for 10 minutes each day for six months- then it can cost you over £58. Break this down further and it will cost you 3 pence a minute.

The cost of idling is not just about money though. Air pollution contributes to 36,000 premature deaths each year in the UK alone. Reducing our CO2 emissions wherever we can, could help with this. Idling for just 30 seconds produces over double the amount produced when stopping and restarting the engine.

When Should We Switch Off and Stop Idling?

  • When making deliveries and collections
  • When charging your phone
  • When running the air con
  • When running the heater
  • When taking a break
  • When waiting for someone

What Can We Do To Help?

With a VM Vehicle Maintenance servicing contract, we include AdBlue with our servicing- which reduces the amount of air pollution created by a diesel engine. This can help your diesel vehicle to be kinder to the environment as well as kinder to the lungs of people around you. To find out how we can help, visit VM Vehicle Maintenance here.

As always, thanks for reading and we hope to see you soon!
